The spacious porches of Rana Thuri households are a place for grain storage and for cool refuge from the sun's heat in the sea-level Tarai. The Rana Tharu porch usually has separate fires for the men and women. Compared to other caste groups throughout the Tarai and Nepal, the Rana Tharu women have a more powerful and autonomous role in the household and village.
