The Uyghurs: Kashgar before the Catastrophe

I n 1998, Kevin Bubriski was fortunate to spend time with the Uyghurs in Kashgar, their ancient city on the Silk Road in Xinjiang, China. While there, he made unforgettable photographic portraits and street scenes that reveal a haunting beauty and sense of the past in old Kashgar. Bubriski was drawn to the faces of ordinary people and their daily lives, with the intent that through photographs mutual understanding between people might be fostered. Although 1998 was an uncomfortable time of rapid transformation for the Uyghurs, their oasis city in the high desert was still vibrant, even as the Chinese government’s brutal crackdown was about to commence. In the last few years, up to a million Uyghurs have been detained in “re-education camps” while others have been subjected to forced sterilizations and wider persecution. The vibrancy, beauty, and grit that Bubriski witnessed and photographed more than two decades ago has irrevocably changed. The Uyghur cultural, economic, familial, religious, and spiritual traditions are captured in Bubriski’s images and the extensive text by Tahir Hamut Izgil and the late Dru Gladney. These traditions, interwoven in Uyghurs’ lives and community for more than two millennia, have been severely impacted by the overt and disastrous policies of the Chinese government’s crackdown on Uyghur civil, spiritual, and cultural activities. The Uyghur community is now fractured and split due to widespread surveillance, mass detentions, and incarcerations. This book is also presented in a bilingual edition so that it is not only accessible to Uyghur people living in non-English-speaking regions of the world, but a way for Uyghurs around the world to reaffirm their cultural and social identity wherever they now live. As many Uyghur families are now separated due to detentions or flight to asylum elsewhere, the book is meant to be an enduring gift for the Uyghur people and for all who wish to understand better Uyghur culture and history. Bubriski’s book is a stunning work of art that reveals an earlier time when Kashgar, beloved city of the Uyghurs, retained much of its traditional life and charm.

The New Mexicans

T his remarkable visual record documents Kevin Bubriski’s two-year stay in New Mexico in the early 1980s. As a filmmaking student and young photographer fresh out of the Peace Corps in Nepal, Bubriski fully immersed himself in this new, vibrant, and multifaceted place. From film school, he moved on to a job as still photographer on the set of the film The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez and then took on assignments as a local news photographer—work that would connect him to New Mexicans from all walks of life, both natives and newcomers to the state. With his camera always at the ready, Bubriski covered events from rodeos to mud wrestling matches to the solemn funeral rites of a murdered Santa Fe priest, always open to serendipitous encounters along the way. He followed several of New Mexico’s notable politicians on the campaign trail, including Toney Anaya in his gubernatorial bid and a young Bill Richardson’s congressional campaign. He also documents his extraordinary and insightful access to the residents of State Penitentiary of New Mexico, the local arts community, and public ceremonies and dances of the Northern Pueblos. With the fresh eye of a newcomer to the state who had already explored remote corners of the world, Bubriski has created a moving and evocative record of a moment in time in the northern reaches of the Land of Enchantment.

Legacy in Stone: Syria Before War

Photographs by Kevin Bubriski

A collection of 100 black-and-white photographs taken throughout Syria in 2003, documenting many important ancient sites which are now no longer there due to the still on-going Syrian civil war.

Seven months after the start of the US war in neighboring Iraq, Kevin Bubriski was on two magazine assignments in Aleppo, Syria. At this time of conflict, he sought out assignment work in Syria because he wanted to photograph the deep cultural history there and the human face of Syria, its ordinary people and their daily lives.

Until the Syrian civil war started in 2010 the Aleppo, the Suq was considered to be the longest continuously inhabited place of commerce in the world, for well over two millennia. The Aleppo Suq and many of the places captured in his photographs have since been destroyed in the Syrian civil war.

After his assignments in Aleppo he stayed on in Syria to photograph independently throughout the northern early Christian Dead Cities, the basilica of San Simeon, the Christian pilgrimage sites of Serjila, al Bara, Kharab Shams, Mushabak, Baqirha, Qalb Loze, Resafe, early Islamic sites near Raqqa, and the ancient Roman trade cities of Apamea, and Palmyra. He remembers the absolute solitude of being in these ancient cultural sites with only his Syrian guide. It was the rainy season, it was Ramadan, and there was a new war going on next door in Iraq. There were no other travelers at any of the places he visited except for a small handful of German and Russian tourists at Palmyra, his last stop before returning to Damascus to travel home.

There was an eerie sense of discovery to be in these places of such rich history and haunting beauty. He recalls holding his breath as he saw the ruins before him take shape on the ground glass of the analog film Hasselblad camera, and feeling very fortunate for being a witness to the beauty of the ancient monuments.

Kailash Yatra

M ount Kailash is a holy mountain on the western edge of the Tibetan Plateau in China. Over recent decades, this eerily symmetrical mountain, holy to Bonpos, Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, animists and New Age seekers, has emerged as a globally important site for pilgrimage and tourism. This mountain lies close to the point where the borders of north India and western Nepal meet China. What has been relatively little known to the general audience is the central role that transborder interdependence has played in shaping the lives, livelihoods and culture of the communities residing in these borderland regions, in the proximity of Kailash.

In the monsoon of 2016, an international team of social scientists, artists and members of the local community undertook a difficult 300-kilometre-long trek from district Humla, western Nepal, into the Tibetan Autonomous Region, China. The aim was to document and understand the contemporary rhythms of livelihoods, material culture and perceptions of the sacred among the communities living along an ancient southern route to Mount Kailash, which had been in use for transborder trade and pilgrimage for several centuries. This book, studded with lush photographs, brings to life several individuals and scenes encountered during this expedition-stories of the past, of change, of aspirations, of the sheer beauty and vulnerabilities of life in one of the least accessible but most sacred corners of the world.

Human Documents: Eight Photographers

I n Human Documents, Robert Gardner introduces the work of photographers with whom he has worked over a period of nearly fifty years under the auspices of the Film Study Center at Harvard. Their images achieve the status of what Gardner calls "human documents": visual evidence that testifies to our shared humanity. In images and words, the book adds to the already significant literature on photography and filmmaking as ways to gather both fact and insight into the human condition. In nearly 100 images spanning geographies and cultures including India, New Guinea, Ethiopia, and the United States, Human Documents demonstrates the important role photography can play in furthering our understanding of human nature and connecting people through an almost universal visual language.

Author and cultural critic Eliot Weinberger contributes the essay "Photography and Anthropology (A Contact Sheet)," in which he provides a new and intriguing context for viewing and thinking about the images presented here.

Look into My Eyes: Nuevomexicanos por Vida, '81-'83

T his book is a photographic documentation of Hispanic New Mexicans (Nuevomexicanos) taken between 1981 and 1983 in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and in several northern New Mexico villages. While there is an insider intimacy to the photographs in this book, they have a gritty sense of reality that is neither disturbing nor challenging.

The people, whether looking directly into the lens or away from it, appear to be at ease with the photographer and his camera. Many of these photographs are timeless, while others are a time capsule of the early eighties in New Mexico. This collection will evoke nostalgia of the era and life in New Mexico "back in the day." There is also a universality about the images and time period that will appeal to wider audiences.
